A contemporary Nottinghamshire garden design with a amazing views
We absolutely love helping people to create new gardens. Every project is different, and every customer has a different list of requirements and preferences. Variety is what makes the job so interesting, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Now of course, every job is special, but every now and again we are called to look at a potential new design project that makes us pause with excitement. A complete blank canvas on a glorious hill-top location with stunning open views across South Nottinghamshire farmland, and a new garden to complement a beautiful contemporary new-build project? This is going to be fun!
"Complement the house and make the most of the views"
Understandably, our delightful customer wanted to make the most of the fantastic rural views, but they also wanted to create a garden which complemented the style and layout of the architecture. On a practical note, they also requested a dog-friendly area of lawn, some raised beds, garden lighting and a means of successfully managing the level changes on the gently sloping site.
Why have one seating and entertaining area when you can have two?
We began by creating two seating and entertaining areas. One would be perfect for alfresco dining, whilst the other would be for more relaxed seating and ideal for taking in the breath-taking views. Connected by a couple of simple steps, these seating areas would be paved with low-maintenance porcelain tiles to complement the tiles used throughout the ground-floor of the house. Textural and visual contrast is provided by a large rectangular panel of black composite decking leading directly from the properties large sliding doors. The decking creates an attractive and functional link between the house and the garden, as well as ensuring that the key areas of the garden aren’t so close to the house as to spoil the far-reaching views.
Raised beds, a water feature and sculptural offset metal arches
A pair of L-shaped raised beds add structure and additional interest, as well as providing a degree of enclosure for the dining area. They also provide a small amount of shelter from the prevailing winds. A contemporary spherical water feature gives additional noise and visual interest. Added height and structure is also provided by a pair of intersecting offset steel arches which frame the more relaxed seating space. Complete with an absolutely beautiful bespoke outdoor lamp (added shortly after the rest of the garden was completed), these arches have become one of the garden’s most loved features.
Restrained planting and fully programmable lighting
At the request of the client, the planting is purposely restrained and minimalistic. Primarily featuring ornamental grasses, evergreen shrubs and a few carefully-selected herbs and perennials, the overall effect is effective and cohesive. Finally, a comprehensive and fully programmable outdoor lighting scheme ensures that the garden can be enjoyed long in to the evenings without excessively impacting on the nocturnal wildlife.
A beautiful garden and a very happy customer
We are delighted that our customer is so happy with their new garden:
"You definitely had a blank canvas and transformed our empty space into a spectacular garden. We wanted the house's energy and style to flow into the garden, which it certainly does. The garden design is edgy and striking. The planting and lighting schemes complement the house design and do not compete with our incredible ever-changing views. The plants and trees within the scheme are truly stunning. Tythorne Garden Design exceeded our expectation on all levels- thank you."
