A contemporary entertaining garden design near Newark
Sometimes we are asked to simply refresh or subtly ‘tweak’ a garden without changing too much, but more often our customers ask us to completely reimagine their outdoor space. This is particularly the case when a property extension is involved. Extensions inevitably change the connection between the house and the garden, and it is important that the garden is adjusted to positively enhance the benefits the extension provides.
Bland and uninspiring transformed into a wonderful space for alfresco entertaining
For this project in a village near Newark, our fantastic clients asked us to improve the sense of flow between their recently added orangery and their bland and uninspiring garden. They also wanted their new garden to be low-maintenance and perfect for entertaining. The existing garden was wide but not very deep, and was dominated by the boundary fences and surrounding properties. Our objective was to create attractive views from the house, a much better sense of 'flow' between the indoors and outdoors, and to make the most of all of the available space.
Creating a definite connection between the house and the garden
We began by suggesting a new ‘feature’ summerhouse directly opposite the orangery. Linked by a raised terrace of porcelain paving, the summerhouse serves as an attractive and welcoming focal point, and provides a superb all-weather environment for spending time with friends and family. Beautifully constructed by our friends at Snuggeries, the bespoke summerhouse is a definite star feature for this amazing garden.
Multiple seating areas, a beautiful water feature and a improved sense of privacy
Elsewhere in the new garden, a generously-proportioned seating and entertaining area creates a lovely spot for outdoor dining, whilst a separate bench provides an opportunity for a quiet moment to enjoy a cup of coffee and the views of the garden. A contemporary spherical water feature adds wonderful sound and visual interest, and a simple timber perimeter screen (painted black to match the summerhouse) provides additional interest and a much needed sense of privacy.
Perfect planting and lighting design to make the most of the space
Two areas of lawn give balance and space for young children to play, and are surrounded by mixed-planting borders. Packed with low-maintenance shrubs, perennials and ornamental grasses, the planting beds offer an abundance of year-round colour and interest. The …all with the black timber screen as a stunning backdrop. Finally, a subtle garden lighting scheme provides added interest and ensures that the garden can be fully enjoyed long into the evening.
A beautiful and practical entertaining space
This was a great project for us, and we really enjoyed working for such lovely clients. Our deceptively simple design utilises strong and definite lines to make the garden feel larger and so much more interesting. We are so pleased to see that it is now being lovingly enjoyed by our customer and their extended family.
